When Web Design Goes Wrong

Here we go, usually we wake up, gauge the web world with huge inspirational lists like “41 Sleek Single Page Websites” or “30 Black and White Websites“.

Today we are going in a totally different direction, let’s take a look into the world of really really bad web design. This post is not to make fun of the site or designer, even though I am sure this will be one of the more comical post you see. What you should take from this post is how much technology has changed, how design has grown as well as, how important it is for us designers to raise awareness of good design.

We all know there are designers out there that charge ridiculous amounts of money to do these things, and companies believe them because they don’t know better. I had a good time putting this post together, so I hope you enjoy “When Web Design Goes Wrong”.

My name is Cody and I work for a Virginia Web Design company called Vision Studios. We found this article and supporting examples of web development, web design, and graphic design very useful. It has always been our thought that people make buying decisions on the way sites and marketing material look. The example screen old school and if you are not re freshing you branding efforts at least every two years you are going to end up as an example on a wonderful post like this. Keep up the great work and blogs!

…..and even paying someone 4000 euros, someone not even registered as being on the books, to totally and utterly balls up a website is a bad move too. Hey posters, a previous comment on this thread did this to us, can you guess who? Then then tried to set up rival websites to us, (their clients), then sold our personal details and business leads to a rival website. Now THAT is when web design goes wrong eh?

Ouch! Some of those designs are a little (okay, a lot) rough on the eyes. Yvette’s site is particularly awful…

Some of your selections are certainly pretty funny – really cluttered, or virtually unreadable. For others, I wonder why you chose them. For example, what triggered you about http://www.joyofquotes.com ? Perhaps you just hate the green menu bar? That might not be the ideal choice, but I think it is a lot better than a black background, which is a definite no-no for web page design.

Internet is quite successful after approx. 10 years of growing. It is not understandable that you can find sites like those in the year 2010. There are still a lot of strange people outside there. The good thing is, they can be undiscovered on the first glance.

I never experienced this kind of freaky website. I think it is an inspiration for bad designer to design more messy website

    • June 29, 2011 at 4:29 pm

Most of this stuff is downright atrocious. I understand buyers may not know everything, but when given that stuff, they need to ask for a refund. They do look at other sites often

Oh my lord how things have changed. I think Gateweay Properties is my favourite. What is going on with that? Note: people WILL notice if you give your website to your 11 year old son to do! Don’t be a cheapskate, talk to a designer. Most printing companies and design agencies will have them available.

I think this is kind of like when people go on american idol that think they are great and end up being horrible. These people probably think that their sites are awesome with great graphics.

    • June 22, 2011 at 10:05 pm

how do people not realize how awful their sites are especially when you can hire someone for reasonably cheap nowadays to build you a simple site.

    • June 22, 2011 at 10:03 pm

Hahaha.. That is too funny! The cascading revenue is the best..

    • June 20, 2011 at 9:24 am

Hi, certainly I’ll agree. If you design an awesome website and launch it, but no search engine knows about it, I think it is useless.

    • June 20, 2011 at 2:27 am

Not all you posted here are that bad except for the 1st one. Anyway not every body has a good taste when it comes to designs. So it is still the rights of the owner to decide what designs will he/she likes.

Comments are well written, But few things I would like to add few things while designing website one should keep in mind that.
      1. Design should have easy navigation
      2. Take less time to load
      3. Every design back should have way to original page
      4. Image should have mapped as navigation.

May be the above mentioned sites are very old this might be the reason.
      Thank you
      Usman

You would at least have to have a clue about php to be able to modify a wordpress theme, though you can get quite far with html/css only. If you download a random theme, just browse through the .php files and the style.css file

Amazing! I find that as a trained designer, now in the Internet design industry, I’m always up against sites that look like this. The usual “we can do it for £99″ scenario.

The old adage of “you get what you pay for” is more than obvious in the examples above!

If you want a good design, you should expect to pay a premium.

      Good post!

I wonder how old they are. I was surprised that Fabric Land haven’t updated their website, they are quite well known across the UK. I guess it all depends on how important your website is to your business.

Improved technology of the digital picture frame includes important features in the Digital photo frames by Nix digital frames which allow the viewing of thumbnails. This is important to locate a particular picture you want displayed in the digital photo frame. Another important aspect of the digital picture frame is the better quality colour. It is also faster to navigate.

You must define a column in your content provider for each suggestion to provide an action message, then provide the name of that column in this attribute. The system looks at your suggestion cursor, using the string provided here to select your action message column, and then select the action message string from the Cursor.

Some interesting designs there, many seem out of date, I wonder how old they are. I was surprised that Fabric Land haven’t updated their website, they are quite well known across the UK. I guess it all depends on how important your website is to your business.

    • October 6, 2010 at 12:23 pm

There are some truly horrendous examples on here, I would shoot my web designer if he came out with something like any of these.

    • October 5, 2010 at 6:10 am

Some sites are purposefully designed badly as it gets them publicity, exposure and links from other websites. There is a classic example above, I’ll let you guess which one.

I’d like to see these sites re-designed. Kinda glad that most (or any) weren’t businesses offering design services. I did see one once though (Google: Fast Design 7), couldn’t work out if it was a joke or not.

    • July 28, 2010 at 7:10 am

The truth is that some of them have such ugly sites coz of traffic issue, not considering the usability which in the long run affects the bounce rate. If potential users search out your sites and they in the long run derive no good use from the sites, they will leave in no time. Hence, what is the real gain?

    • May 21, 2010 at 2:08 pm

Oh my. These are horrendous! I agree with Tamia ^^, these owners/operators are either incredibly naive, incompetent or COMPLETELY genius. I mean, no such thing as bad pub — as evidenced by your ridiculously designed site being the subject of an extremely popular blog. If nothing else, it’s damn good for a laugh. :-)

    • May 17, 2010 at 7:48 pm

I agree with Neil–Yvette’s is famously bad. So much so, that they get a lot of views from people like me who want to see just HOW bad it is. Which is sort of the point.

    • May 17, 2010 at 5:07 am

These post just proves how much web design has progressed. The designs above have an archaic feel with bad images and no structure to the layout. Aside from proving how much web designs have improved in the last ten years this post makes it very clear how to design a good website and learn from previous mistakes!

    • May 15, 2010 at 9:29 am

Oh, my god. They’re just so damn ugly! o_O

    • May 14, 2010 at 8:49 am

I bet you they’re all “design by committee” websites. ;)

    • May 13, 2010 at 5:54 pm

I feel that the Money Saving Expert doesn’t really belong in that list, it is really good compared to the others ;)

    • May 13, 2010 at 4:05 pm

I think your notebook paper background should be included in this list.

    • May 13, 2010 at 7:34 am

Bookmarking Yvette’s page so I can show my clients what I want to build them. Also coming soon, NS4 optimized table (not less) based code.

Seriously, do people really give away their hard earned money for this stuff? I would think most of these sites would only serve to make the company look silly.

    • May 13, 2010 at 2:47 am

Amazing.. I’m in shock.. just seeing that many bad designs in one place :(

    • May 12, 2010 at 6:34 pm

Rofl…Yvette’s I think is the best one of all. That site could give you a seizure. Click on the ‘map’ link and you’ll get a hand-drawn MS paint map. Pure gold.

    • May 12, 2010 at 4:12 pm

woohoo……. i bet on the ” lings cars ” layout , the designer ( which i guess was would be the the owner , my best guess) just put his.. whole thought process… up there… just as it came… LᖶL. .. $ick..

    • May 12, 2010 at 3:04 pm

Despite the Money Saving Expert not having the nicest site in the world, it is VERY popular in the UK with 9.3 million views in March! Shows that design isnt everything, content also means alot
