Olympic Logos Past and Present

The 2010 Winter Olympic Games kicked off this weekend! This year the games are hosted in our home country of Canada, and we’re pretty hyped about it.

Each Olympic games has a massive ad campaign leading up to the games, which always features the logo that has been designed for that specific games.
The Olympic rings have been around for decades, and it is unlikely that they will be going anywhere sometime soon. Each Olympic Games has it’s own logo and brand, yet it always includes the 5 Olympic rings.

The Olympic brand is seen around the world, through every media stream, everywhere we look for the few weeks the games are on, so the logo is very important to the brand of the specific games. Check out how the logos have progressed throughout the years, crossing cultural boarders and design styles.

oh.. and.. GO CANADA!

These logos are an art form and wow ! What a collection. These would be fabulous hanging on gallery walls. I particularly like the very early posters.

I love the fact it creates controversy even to this day and I think it’ll continue even when the games are ove

Being a fan of Olympic Weight Lifting among other things, I really enjoy this beautiful collection of Olympic Logos. Thank you!

80′s very simple but very attractive style logos.

The Torino 2006 Winter Olympics logo was quite nice if I recall.

Being an Aussie I guess I’m somewhat biased but I do have to say my personal favourite is the Sydney 2000 Olympics logo. London is well … just bloody awful.

    • February 20, 2010 at 10:56 pm

I think it’s really interesting how similar some of the logos are.

      Albertville and Atlanta
      Nagano and Sydney
      Beijing and Vancouver

Then of course there is London which hopefully nobody will try to copy.

I find the London 2012 amazing and original, and I love the fact it creates controversy even to this day and I think it’ll continue even when the games are over. Now THAT’s effective design, wether you like it or not.

The Sidney logo is nice. I love the way they incorporated the boomerangs to make up the figure. Absolutely great conceptualization. The Nagano logo is gorgeous and smooth as well. The London logo…not so much. As far as it being groundbreaking…it just looks broken. I don’t see what it’s supposed to be.

      Cheers!

Good Post! I think the Salt Lake City logo looks professional and well done. The vancouver one is pretty fun. London is dreadful. Beijing looks kind of childish to me. Nagano’s is sweet.

Looking at the logos throughout the years is interesting and very representative of the era, they reflect the political views and level of design from that period. The London 2012 logo has been very controversial but non of the logos above are ground breaking in there design. The London Logo has definitely taken a step back from the traditional format & style of previous logos.

    • February 16, 2010 at 5:48 pm

Yeah I agree the London 2012 logo is awful and my country paid someone £400,000 to design it!!! Money well spent I think not.

    • February 16, 2010 at 10:35 am

That London logo is just dreadful! Someone should be fired for that one.
