  • We recently showcased Very Colourful Websites , so now I think it’s time to give the opposite “colour” scheme some time in the spotlight. By opposite of course I mean Black and White. I find it very fascinating and inspiring when website designers take the Black and White design scheme approach, in a web marketplace of sensory overload with vibrant colours and techniques. It’s great to see that some designers still believe in Less is More.

So please don’t adjust your monitor colour settings, these ARE supposed to be in black and white.

The contrast of the black and white makes these sites come out so clean and awesome..

The black and white sites are very classic looking, i think the designs with a variety of tones and textures in the designs look the most effective and less flat.

even though colour fashionista may say that red invokes passion or orange expresses vibrancy, i maintain that lights and shadows are the best expression of the content. the only problem is that if you want or need to link external multimedia into your site. as far as i know there is no b&w filter for a youtube vid or flickr photo but it looks like most of these sites are business-oriented anyways.

Isn’t it amazing to find such a wide gamut of emotions being expressed with just 2 colors? This is such a refreshing and exciting collection. It’s sure to make every designer rethink about designing principles.

It seems to me that black and white is best utilized in areas where creativity is valued. Design firms, decorating companies, etc. It probably wouldn’t be the best choice for firms wanting to convey professionalism and seriousness, like accounting firms.
