  • Horizontal websites are a great new way to create unique web experiences. Instead of the usual vertical scrolling with the majority of websites, designers have been looking at new ways for the user to view content. Mostly horizontal websites have been apparent in designer portfolios. With wide screen monitors becoming more and more popular, this experience could be a great new way of interacting on the web.

Horizontal web sites are not a new phenomenum. I have designed and built them since the early 2000s. As much as I admire them unfortunately my clients are less inclined to have one because they believe they are counter-intuitive which I happen to agree with. Still, some pretty sites in this show case. Well done.

Cool sites. Here is another collection of horizontal websites. if you scroll to the right up to about 70%, you’ll see an index of sites: http://www.thehorizontalway.com/

A horizontal layout is as intuitive as the designer makes it. If the gestalt of the design does not make the navigation options clear, of course it will be counter-intuitive — the same can be said for vertical layouts. In many of the examples, the content is primarily able to fit on one page. In this case, the only difference between this and a standard one-page layout is the sliding animation involved, which is much more visually dynamic than simply clicking a link and loading a new page.

I like horizontal websites. I’m not a designer :( but that format can give a lot for experimenting I think. Why not to mix vertical and horizontal doing a website in L, T or just a big square out of fit from your screen where your screen can scroll even in diagonal with your mouse?

most of these design are so cute with very creative graphics!! but I think that horizontal design for websites isn’t so usable as we can think… so.. greatings for these design but not for horizontal layout .. bye

Horizontal Layout is making a comeback… Its always better to scroll sideways, almost like flipping a page in real life, the interaction is simply natural. Very inspirational collection, thank you.

Thanks for all your comments !

    • May 13, 2009 at 7:14 pm

Thanks for featuring my site. I’ve actually just redesigned it (while keeping the horizontal scroll) so if you could please redo your image, that’d be great!

I really like this kind of design for small sites with only a few pages of content. For anything bigger, it just isn’t very practical.
