22 Radiant Red Websites

Red is such a powerful colour, it provides emotion and a great emphasis on detail. With a dark, gray colour scheme – red can be used to emphasize text, navigation menus and more. Some designers decide to create a full blown website with bright red colours.  Some designers will say that text is very hard to read on red, I just designed a website with a red colour scheme and some of my higher up’s had a very tough time agreeing with the design choice. I understand that it can be hard to read but the web is so big, it is hard to create a unique website if everyone wants to read on white. Do you have any problems with reading red or even any other colours on white or black backgrounds.

      These are all very nice.

Websites with bright colors usually don’t bother me as much as they seem to bother most other people. I sometimes want to try bright colors on my site but I usually defer to public opinion and keep it subdued. Of course there’s bright and then there’s BRIGHT. Sites with bright yellow or lime green backgrounds are very hard on the eyes. I don’t like most dark background sites. Red text on black is the absolute worst. I’ve seen a lot of other color combinations that are difficult to read. Light grey text on white is very popular these days and I have some trouble with that. This site for example – it isn’t as bad as some but I would still prefer a shade or two darker.

As a designer of youth-targeted web sites I frequently use red for both highlight elements and full-blown layouts. Whilst I understand that some designers may see an accessibility issue with text on a red background, careful selection of typeface and type colour combined with careful coding allow a great deal of freedom for the designer.

Red is such a potent colour online (as your examples above illustrate well) it’s crazy that some people are reluctant to accept it’s sensible use.

      Great article and site examples!

These are all really cool. I think every now and then you should show websites with just their color and representation on what that color means to design, just like this one. This was a great look! :)

That’s a really inspiring collection. I’ve always found a red palette one of the most difficult to implement effectively in web design. These really demonstrate how you can use the color as the main focus of the site without it being overpowering or garish.
